Electromagnetic radiations with a wavelength longer than the visible light, but are shorter than microwave radiation, are called infrared lasers. Optical fibers are used for carrying infrared waves. Waves having wavelengths 1330 nm or 1550 nm are typically used with silica fibers. Procedures that involve welding and cutting equipment use infrared lasers. It is also used in equipments for engraving of materials. As they provide high power and fine band tunable light, they are used in equipments, which use photo acoustic (PA) techniques. In PA detection of gases, CO2 and CO lasers are usually used at present as they provide relatively high power.
However, lasers with a wavelength of 510 to 570 nanometers are called green lasers. Green laser technology is used in laser projection displays, laser pointers, interferometers, and for pumping of solid-state lasers like Ti-sapphire lasers. It is also applied in processing of metals such as gold, copper, or silicon due to their high absorption coefficient as compared to the near-infrared lasers.
The range of applications for Green lasers is limited, because they carry a low spectrum range. Still, they are the most common visible lasers due to their uniqueness.
In the visible light spectrum, green is the brightest color. The frequency of green light is 532 nm. It becomes the brightest possible laser light frequency when a laser is used to condense this light into a high power beam. So, today, green light lasers are used in the most popular forms of handheld laser equipments that are available online and in the open market
One of the most common lasers is Argon-ion lasers. They are created with the amplification of light in argon plasma made with an electric discharge. They can achieve the highest amount of power at 514 nanometers. Though Green lasers can easily reach these limits, they will have to use a large amount of electrical power and thus bigger cooling systems. Small air-cooled tubes are used in green lasers which needs hundreds of watts of electrical power to generate beams of 10 Milli-watts capacity. The air-cooled tubes are very expensive and have a limited operational life around a few thousand hours.
Scientists are researching on how to develop a mechanism that will make it possible to transmit electronic data through green lasers. If this is successfully developed at moderate costs, it will change the way people communicate with each other. Thus, green lasers appear to be a catalyst that can change the communication industry in and out.
However, on the flip side, this visually spectacular and highly useful green laser beam is also potentially dangerous. If a person's eye is exposed to this 532 nm green laser light there is possibility of laser retinal damage to the eye. Proper safety measures are to be taken to avoid this. Even though the equipments, which use green laser technology, include standard safety features it is the ultimate responsibility of the user to protect themselves and the spectators from exposure to green laser beams.
